January Pictures

I haven't meant to be a once or twice a month blogger, but that is just kind of how it is happening as of late. We had a good January and I can hardly believe it is already over. Here are some pictures to recap. For my day of teaching preschool in January the topic was fish. I thought it would be fun to get some goldfish for the kids to see the real deal. The kids loved the fish, but there have been several lessons learned from owning goldfish...let me share.

1. I had no idea they were so high maintenance. We are talking changing their water every other day. Something that this pregnant woman has not wanted to do. I have heard from Shay's mouth many a time, "whose idea was it to get these fish?"

2. If you don't put them in a proper fish bowl these little buggers swim around like their crazy. They were first in the vases pictured below. We weren't sure they could find their food all the way at the top (week 3 into this we're not sure they like to eat at all, at least while we are watching). So we changed them to another bowl. Lesson learned...don't put fish in a bowl that has etched flowers on the side. They swim around even crazier. They are currently in an emptied 2 Liter soda bottle with the top cut off (they seem a little more calm in there). Shay was going around looking for a bigger, Tupperware type container they could have room to roam. I told him there were none that I wanted fish goo in. He then told me they were like POWs (prisoners of war). Got a good giggle out of that one. Next time (if ever there is a next time of us owning fish) we will get them a proper fish bowl or tank.

3. You definitely need to buy a fish net to go with fish so that you can transfer them during the water changing process. I looked over while Shay was changing their water one night to see a mortified Shay. He was emptying some of the water out (with the fish in it) and one of the fishie's slipped down the sink. Shay doesn't even kill spiders, he lets them go outside. He felt horrible. He flushed enough water down the sink hoping that the fish would slip down the drain before the garbage disposal got him. When Nicholas noticed the next morning that one was missing I got to explain what had happened.

4. Probably the best lesson learned, I (Kim) am not a pet person. I know fish are probably the easist pet to own, but it has not been for me. I will think twice about purchasing any other pets.

And for your enjoyment, some pictures of the little guys. We started out with 5 and we are now down to 2. Two have gone the way of the tubes and one resides at William's home. My favorite was when Em was looking into this vase she had her hands wrapped around the back which resulted in her hands being big and she said to me, "Mine hands are big."
Moving on to other January things. I had to take a picture of this one night just to remember. This is Emilie's line up of friends to sleep with. Perhaps a bit much? She doesn't think so. In fact, she probably got this from me. I remember having a lot on my bed growing up too.
Just a picture of Emilie chillin' in the small spiderman chair. She looked like she was just trying to lounge like she would in our recliner chair.
My sister Julianna got this cute little dress for Emilie. That morning was the easist morning to get her dressed because she had something new to wear. I told Shay I just might have to have something new everyday for her to wear. He said something like, "yeah, right."

Doesn't she look darling?
And some of her being goofy.
Dancing.
That same morning Nicholas was at preschool so we ladies decided to paint toe nails. I pulled all my colors out for Em to look through. She had a lot of fun looking through all of them to pick one out.
Raspberry colored toes.
Waiting for them to dry. Takes far too long.
Em wearing Nicholas' jammies like Steve Urkel. Nicholas is getting ready to pull his up in the background. I did not get any pictures of that.
That made dad think of his big bear pants that the kids could both fit into. So we got some good laughs out of them both being in the bear pants. Mostly falling on the floor because they couldn't move together. It was quite hilarious.
And I just have to share because I am so excited about it. I am making a quilt for baby #3 (we have yet to decide on a name). Here is the fabric and here is the pattern (the pinwheel one). I bought some of the fabric on Saturday and it makes me happy just looking at it. I am so excited to get started.

Sad Day

Remember the fish I bought 3 months ago? If not, click here. You would think the reason that it is a sad day is because they finally decided to kick the can, but alas they have not. They are still going strong and I believe they plan to for the rest of our lives. These ones are not giving up easily. Probably to teach me a lesson about buying animals you don't intend to take care of long-term.

Anyway, the sadness of the day. Since these small swimmers have been in our home for 3 months, we have been changing their water for 3 months straight (not something I enjoy doing, there is something about them flipping their little bodies around in the net for that split second you have them out of the water that creeps me out). Because of all the water changing they have had several receptacles they have lived in, a Tupperware (Shay says it is too small for their needs), a blue bowl (directly out of my cupboard), and if they are really lucky they get a recycled 2 liter soda bottle (this has happened twice since we're not big soda drinkers around here). Yes, it would be easier just to buy a fish bowl I know. I wasn't planning on these fish living for 3 months. So, to get to the point. Normally, when one of these receptacles is washed, it is pulled from the dishwasher and put under the kitchen sink to be used on the next water changing. However, a few times they sneak back into their spots in the cupboards (to my horror). Usually I discover the error and put it under the kitchen sink before they are used. However, yesterday this was not the case. So yesterday I made cookie dough. I cooked up a couple of batches and put the rest of the dough in the fridge to be used later. This morning as I was doing the dishes and looking at our wonderful fish (realizing they are need of a water change again) I realized that the bowl I put the cookie dough in was none other than the blue fish bowl. I was horrified. I am so sad because I am too grossed out by the fact that these little fish have swam around in that bowl so much to use the cookie dough. So the cookie dough has got to go. What a sad, sad day. Perfectly good cookie dough down the drain.

Morals of the story:

1. Don't use normal kitchen bowls to put your fish in, just buy a fish bowl.

2. Never buy fish again!

Rest In Peace Fishies

Our big fish was meeting the end of his life today. I decided that instead of watching him and allowing him to suffer that I would just let him out of his misery. The other fish just happened to be in the same container as him and I figured he might be diseased too (I should also mention that he appeared to be a bit cannibalistic toward the end. That or he was turning into a kissing goldfish. Or just trying to annoy the bigger one by charging at him. I didn't want that type of creature in my home), so he met with the porcelain bowl as well. They had a good 3 month run at our home. I am sure they are on to better things and places.

As for me, I will never hear the end of the fact that I flushed one good fish with the bad fish. I told Shay I am willing to answer for my actions on the other side. Including talking with the good fish that I flushed and explaining to him why he had to go as well. I guess I better come up with something good.

Farewell fishies!!

(I just told Shay the title of my post, he said "rest in peace" more like CSI. He could have saved the 2nd ones life, but he never responded to the text I sent him letting him know of my intentions. (He may or may not have been on a conference call at the time, but that is not relevant).

For fun, the texts I sent to Shay:

"The big fish is going. Can I just flush them both?"

6 minutes later:

"Decision made. They are gone. I can hear them rejoicing now."

He had his chance.
